Freshness and convenience? Packaging innovation is driving the rapid growth of a new generation of snacks.

The global savory snacks market is projected to grow from USD 94.5 billion in 2015 to USD 138.2 billion by 2020 (GlobalData, 2016), and, driven by consumers’ growing health consciousness, the very definition of “snack” is evolving.

Nielsen’s survey shows that in the U.S. market, snacks account for 11% of all eating occasions, and consumers are seeking more than just chips and cookies—they are increasingly focused on healthy eating and the ingredients in their food. Fifty-four percent of consumers say they aim to consume as many vegetables as possible.

For European consumers, healthiness is also a key concern: two-thirds of Europeans snack on salty treats like potato chips and nuts at least once a week, with 11% doing so several times a day. Compared to fat content and calorie levels, more than one-third of European respondents place greater emphasis on natural ingredients—and even organic ones—in their food.

Meat-based snack sticks are gradually gaining popularity.

As consumers place greater emphasis on health‑focused ingredients, the very definition of snacks is evolving. Meat‑based snack bars, which are steadily gaining popularity, serve as a prime example of this trend.

Wild Zora is a rapidly growing brand that primarily produces meat- and vegetable-based snack bars, such as a Mediterranean lamb-flavored bar containing spinach, rosemary, and turmeric.
